I realize I missed a week. . . I’m on vacation and have no sense of what day of the week it actually is! I’ll be back to “regular life” on the 27th, so should be business as usual next week!
As I write this, I’m chillin’ just across the river from Charlottetown, PEI – the birth place of the confederation. I was born there as well, it so happens. I grew up in Ottawa, Ontario – the nation’s capital. Maybe it’s a coincidence, maybe not, but it just so happens that my favourite holiday is Canada Day. However, I only love Canada Day in Ottawa. It’s just not the same anywhere else. I have enjoyed a Canada Day in Charlottetown, which was grand, but it still wasn’t quite the same. I barely acknowledged the day the summers I spent in Guelph.
This year, a bunch of my friends I’ve met here in St John’s will actually be in Ottawa for Canada Day. I’m only a little bit jealous. (By which I mean, seething with jealousy. Wish I could join them!) Myself? I’ll be in St.John’s. I’m volunteering at LSPU hall and catching a play, and then who knows . . .
My first Canada Day in St John’s was pretty low key. A girl from work was having a BBQ, so I headed to that. Good food, good friends, good laughs. Certainly a fun night, but not quite the same as Canada Day on The Hill. Nevertheless, a fun night. Learned that to effectively chug a beer from a bottle, you need to put a straw in it to let air into the bottle while you chug. Definite highlight of the evening was when a bunch of hot guys were out and about across the street.

Anyhow, as Canada Day is coming up, I thought I’d give my favourite holiday a little shout out. This year, Will & Kate will be at the celebration on Parliament Hill – both the afternoon and evening celebrations – so things will be a bit ridiculous, I’m sure. Lots going on, if you have a chance to head to the capital city, I would recommend it! Check out the line up here.
While I’ve been here in PEI, I’ve been hitting up several museums and heritage sites, and have been learning a lot about the beginnings of this country. I’ll spare you the details (for now, at least!), but I friggin’ love this country. (The big conference where confederation was first discussed? Mostly a big social event involving a lot of champagne.) One day I’ll return to Ottawa for the big celebrations (maybe the 150th, that would be a good one, I’m sure!). In the meantime, I’ll keep one of my Canada Day traditions alive no matter where I am. . .
Started painting wee flags on my toes some time in high school, and have been doing it ever since. No matter how laid back the celebrations, I can’t let go of a bit of Ottawa silliness!
In case you’re wondering what is my favourite holiday when I’m NOT in Ottawa. . . I’d probably have to go with Thanksgiving, because it’s all about the food. I have a soft spot for Christmas, but Thanksgiving wins because the primary focus is food!

You are very talented with the nail polish. OK…please forgive my American ignorance…is Canada Day Independence Day? What day is it on? We celebrate US Independence on July 4th with Fireworks. What do you do for Canada Day? I also love that you’re patriotic whilst checking out cute boys. Also, please tell Will and Kate (if you run into them) that Will married the wrong Kate…the one he meant to marry is ME!
Canada Day is July 1st. It’s a celebration of the signing of the confederation. . . which actually isn’t an independence day at all. When the confederation was signed, it was just bringing together the colonies of British North America into one union, or kingdom, called the Dominion of Canada. There’s actually no set event that marked our independence from being a british colony… it just kind of happened over time. But July 1, 1867 is considered the birth date of Canada 🙂
And I will not be running into Will & Kate, as I’ll be back in Newfoundland before they start their Canadian tour, and they aren’t including Newfoundland… and I’m better off, I’d say, judging by all the crazy preperations I heard of in PEI!!
